Why Are My Headlights Cloudy? It's Sun Damage
Nobody notices the day it starts. Somewhere around a vehicle’s fifth Texas summer, the lenses go from invisible to sea glass — dull, faintly yellow, vaguely frosted. A wash does nothing. That’s when the real question gets typed into a phone: why are my headlights cloudy?
Quick Answer: Headlights get cloudy because of UV oxidation, not dirt. Every modern lens is polycarbonate plastic protected by a thin factory UV coating; years of direct sun break that coating down, and then sunlight oxidizes the plastic itself. The damage is in the lens, not on it — which is why washing never clears it.
What Causes Cloudy Headlights?
The auto industry traded glass for polycarbonate decades ago — a plastic chosen because it sheds weight and shrugs off gravel that would shatter an old sealed-beam lamp. Its one weakness is ultraviolet light, which breaks polycarbonate down. Every lens therefore leaves the factory wearing a microns-thin UV-cured hardcoat — the only thing standing between the plastic and the sun.
That film has a lifespan. Kaufman County hands a lens 200-plus days of direct sun a year, and the factory hardcoat usually gives out somewhere in years four through six. AAA’s testing found headlights can begin showing deterioration as early as three to five years, which matches what we see in driveways from Kaufman to Rockwall.
Sunlight has accomplices, too. Harsh car-wash soaps wear at the protective coating, heat cycling stresses the plastic, and road grit sands microscopic scratches into the surface; AAA’s own cause list adds road debris kicked up from the road, weather peeling the factory coating, and condensation inside the housing. Whatever you call the result — hazy, yellowed, milky — headlights get foggy for one dominant reason, and it’s shining on your driveway.
How Headlight Oxidation Actually Works
So why do headlights get cloudy rather than simply dirty? Chemistry. UV light carries enough energy to break polycarbonate’s chemical bonds, and the broken chains react with oxygen — that’s the oxidation in headlight oxidation. Peer-reviewed research on polycarbonate weathering shows the process weakens the surface layer until it turns brittle and erodes into microscopic roughness.
The haze isn’t a deposit the lens picked up along the way — it’s what the outer plastic has turned into. There is nothing to wash off, because the damaged material and the lens are the same object. It’s also why cloudy lenses seem to clear up in wet weather: rain floods the microscopic roughness and lets light pass cleanly — until the lens dries and the scatter returns.
Why Do Headlights Turn Yellow — and Why Do Some Just Look Hazy?
They’re two symptoms of the same damage. Yellowing is chemical: the breakdown products UV creates in polycarbonate absorb blue light, and a surface that eats blue light reads yellow to your eye. Haze is physical: the eroding surface scatters light instead of passing it straight through, the way sanded plastic looks frosted. Most failed lenses show both at once, and materials research suggests humidity can speed the yellowing along — studies disagree on how much, but North Texas supplies both in generous portions.
A third look gets lumped in with hazy headlights and is a different problem entirely: fog or droplets on the inside of the lens. That’s not oxidation — it’s a failed housing seal letting moisture in, and polishing the outside of a sealed housing can’t touch the water trapped inside it. Heat compounds it — the sun attacks the plastic’s chemistry while hundred-degree afternoons dry it out. Add the local parking reality — trucks and SUVs living in driveways, not garages — and the factory film’s four-to-six-year window is exactly what you’d expect. Garage-kept vehicles land at the long end; a truck parked nose-west all afternoon lands at the short end. What Cloudy Headlights Mean for Night Driving
This is where cosmetic stops being the right word. AAA research published in 2018 found that clouded or yellowed headlights generate only 20 percent of the amount of light new headlights do — not 20 percent less, 20 percent of the total. AAA pairs that with the stat that makes it matter: 50 percent of crashes occur at night.
And in Texas, nobody checks for you anymore. The state ended annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles in January 2025; Kaufman County drivers now get an emissions test only, and an emissions test never looks at a headlight.
