How Long Does It Take to Detail a Car? Honest Times, Service by Service

Nate Bridges

“How long does it take to detail a car?” is usually the second question we hear after the price — and it deserves a better answer than “it depends.” The honest range runs from a 60-minute wash to a two-day ceramic coating install, and where your vehicle lands depends on exactly three things: which service you book, what condition the vehicle is in, and how big it is. Here are the real time ranges we work to at driveways across Kaufman County — the same numbers published on every one of our service pages.

Quick Answer: A full detail takes 2–3 hours for most vehicles. A basic exterior hand wash runs 60–90 minutes, an interior or exterior detail 2–3 hours, paint correction 4–8 hours, and a ceramic coating is a one-to-two-day job with a 12–24 hour cure window. Heavy soiling, larger vehicles, and add-ons stretch every range.

Detailing Time by Service

Every figure below comes straight from our published packages — no best-case marketing numbers. This is what we actually schedule.

ServiceTypical Time
Basic exterior hand wash60–90 minutes
Wash + interior package90–120 minutes
Headlight restoration45–60 minutes (75–90 for heavy oxidation)
Full detail2–3 hours
Interior detail2–3 hours (3–4 with heavy soiling)
Exterior detail2–3 hours (3–4 for larger vehicles)
Truck detailingUnder 2 hours basic; 3–4 hours full exterior
Paint correction4–8 hours
RV wash & wax2–4 hours (Class A rigs are full-day work)
Boat detailing3–7 hours by package
Jet ski detailing1.5–2 hours
Ceramic coating1–2 days, plus a 12–24 hour cure

The pattern is simple: maintenance services are measured in minutes, resets are measured in hours, and protection installs are measured in days. The full lineup, with pricing, lives on our services page.

What Stretches a Detail — and What Doesn’t

Three variables move every one of those ranges, and none of them are secrets.

Condition does the most damage to the clock. Pet hair embeds in carpet fibers and takes dedicated tools and real time to extract. Sand and fine gravel work into mats and seat tracks. Sticky spills cure into cup holders in Texas heat. A vehicle that hasn’t been detailed in a year or more sits at the top of its range; a maintained daily driver on a regular wash schedule can finish a full detail closer to 1–1.5 hours.

Size is the quiet multiplier. An exterior detail that runs 2–3 hours on a sedan runs closer to 3–4 on a full-size truck, Suburban, or lifted rig — more panel surface, taller wheels, deeper wheel wells. It’s the same work; there’s just more of it.

Add-ons are honest additions, not padding. Steam extraction on fabric, leather conditioning, engine-bay work, and paint sealant each add real minutes because each is a real process with its own dwell times. We’d rather you add them deliberately than assume they were squeezed into the base clock.

What doesn’t stretch the job: the walk-around. Before any work starts, we walk the vehicle with you, flag anything that moves the time or price, and quote both before touching a panel. You never find out a detail “ran long” after the fact.

Why the Multi-Day Jobs Take Multi Days

Paint correction and ceramic coating sit in their own category because the clock is set by chemistry and physics, not effort. Correction runs 4–8 hours because every panel gets machine-polished with paint thickness checks throughout — a two-stage correction on a truck or SUV takes most of a day, and rushing it is how paint gets burned.

Ceramic coating is a one-to-two-day job because multi-stage prep is 80% of the work: hand wash, clay bar, single-stage correction, then a panel wipe before the coating ever comes out. After application, the vehicle cures 12–24 hours in a dry, covered space. In North Texas summer — where dark paint can pass 150°F and limestone dust rides every county road — that prep-heavy sequence is exactly why the coating lasts years instead of months.

How Long Does a Car Detail Take Out of Your Day? About Two Minutes

Here’s the number that matters more than any range above: how much of your own time the detail costs. At a shop, a 3-hour detail really costs you two drives, a drop-off, a pickup, and however you solve being carless in between — most of a Saturday for three hours of actual work.

Mobile detailing deletes all of that. We come to your driveway in Kaufman, Forney, Terrell, or anywhere on the route with a fully self-contained rig — our own water tank and onboard generator on every job — so the vehicle gets detailed while you mow the lawn, work from home, or leave entirely. Your time investment is the two minutes it takes to book and the final walk-around at the end. The hours in the table above are ours, not yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full car detail take?

Plan on 2–3 hours for most vehicles. A maintained daily driver that gets washed regularly can finish closer to 1–1.5 hours, while a vehicle with pet hair, ground-in sand, or a year of buildup can run 3.5–4 hours or more. We confirm the realistic time at the walk-around before any work starts, so the estimate you hear is the one we stand behind.

Can you detail a car in an hour?

A maintenance wash, yes — our basic exterior hand wash runs 60–90 minutes, and headlight restoration takes about 45–60 minutes. A true full detail, no. Resetting every surface inside and out takes 2–3 hours done properly, and anyone promising a complete detail in under an hour is skipping steps you’re paying for.

How long should I block out for an interior-only detail?

Plan on 2–3 hours for a standard cabin, and 3–4 when the interior is heavily soiled — pet hair, kid messes, and set-in spills all take dedicated tools and dwell time to extract properly. Every vent, seat track, and cup holder gets brushed out individually, and that thoroughness is where the hours go.

How long does ceramic coating take?

Ceramic coating is a one-to-two-day job depending on vehicle size and paint condition, because multi-stage prep — wash, clay bar, paint correction, panel wipe — is 80% of the work. After application, the vehicle needs a shaded or covered space to cure for 12–24 hours before it goes back into normal service.
